Under 15s and Seniors Awards Day (25 October)

So grateful to have access to the wonderful ZIS indoor hall in Adliswil for our Awards Day, the players arrived, the cricket equipment quickly set up and we were ready to begin the first of three 14-over matches with the three 7-a-side teams.

With the team sitting-out taking over scoring and umpiring duties, at 10 o’clock we got underway. The bowling of Suleman and Latif for Team B produced wickets, and added to the two run-outs Team A struggled to get a competitive score on the board. Baljit, Max and Latif scored rapidly and ruthlessly exploited anything offering width and short of a good length and soon overtook the necessary total to win.

In the break the 1st and 2nd XI players were presented with a season photo and a few personal words for each player by the team captains Nic and Brijesh. In addition, batting clads were given to each player for the new season in 2021, courtesy of a generous sponsor. Thanks were also directed at Stephen for his efficient and tireless work with our finances and so many other issues that a club like ours constantly faces, at Laurence for his work checking the books, Steve and Johan for their frequent willingness to take on the task of scoring matches, and Brijesh and Gokul for looking after and ensuring the smooth running of our successful 2020 project, the 2nd XI.

In the second match Team A presented a different picture with runs flowing from the bats of Gokul, Nic, Attaullah and Noorkhan despite two rapid run-outs. Team C’s reply stuttered and started and despite Brijesh and some mighty blows by Gianluca and two sublime 6s off the bat of Alex, they fell short.

The second break saw the Under 15 players Danyal, Shankar, Arya and Sasha presented with awards by Michael and Shafi before Baggy Caps were awarded for 1st XI colours to Baljit, Attaullah, Latif, Lavan and Westy, as well as to Brijesh and Vadim in recognition of their long service and achievements with the club. Finally, the Favotto Cup was deservedly handed over to Shankar, who has had a wonderful season for the club. He is, without doubt, a fine role-model for so many young players, he works hard, has produced excellent performances for his age group and has already become a great asset to the 2nd XI in the senior league. Congratulations to all those players.

The third and final match saw Team B’s Baljit, Shankar and Aryan, in particular, put together 130 despite some tight bowling by Abdullah and Noorkhan. The reply by batsmen Noorkhan, Abdullah, Danyal and Nic was solid but two wonderfully economical final overs by Khawar and Suleman denied what had looked like certain victory for Team B and what would have meant one win apiece for the three team. Instead they fell just short.

The matches reflected the spirit in which all these players go about their game, and what better way is there to spend a day with one’s club mates than in skilful and good-humoured competition that includes younger members who can only profit from older and more experienced players?

Under 13 Romande Cup (10th/11th October)

U15 Romande Cup report

Zurich Crickets, Gingins, Cossonay, and a combined Basel Dragons, GRYCC and Le Chat team took part in this year's U15 Romande Cup tournament in Geneva. It was the combined team that took the cup having won all their matches.

ZCCC U15s had a good overall tournament, despite a rusty start. It was satisfying to see the performance levels improve over the three matches. The team is relatively new together, but it was great to see them bond, and support each other.

  • Abdullah made a perfect all-round contribution with his 4 overs, one wicket, and 52 runs with the bat
  • Noorkhan's two wickets and work in the field was exemplary
  • The first run-out came from Noorkhan
  • Kavi's two direct hits took the tally of run-outs to 4
  • Kavi bowled a wonderfully economical 4-over spell
  • Another fine 50 from Ruan followed his 127 from the previous week

Thrilling finish against Zurich Lions (19th September)

Batting first the Lions posted 178 for the loss of 9 wickets in their 25 overs. The Crickets rotated bowlers giving 8 players the chance to showcase their skills. New man Kavi’s economical 4 overs went for just 16 runs, Vadim’s 2 for 6 runs, while wickets fell to Abdullah, Wafadar, Attaullah and Noorkhan (2). However, it was also the 4 run outs that did the damage and regularly restricted the run rate. The 2nd wicket fell to a lightning Noorkhan pick-up and throw, the 3rd and 6th wickets to direct hits by Kavi! We might have been guilty of failing to take all the catches on offer but Westy, Ruan, Kavi and keeper Max all took one each and 179 to win was certainly gettable.

The Crickets changed up their batting line-up with the two centurions from last week coming in at numbers 4 and 8. In the first 16 overs we moved sedately through the gears and put together 100 for the loss of 6. Standout batsman was Abdullah who made full use of the number 3 spot and finished on 52! With the asking rate at almost 10 and over, Ruan shifted through the gears and blasted a 50 in 24 balls. When he fell it was left to Vincent (15) and Kavi to find the necessary 8 off the remaining 9 balls. With two balls to spare Vincent’s well-struck off drive to the boundary sealed the win!

Zurich Crickets dominate Aargau (12th September)

Winning the toss and batting first Aargau reached 30 in the powerplay only to lose 4 key wickets cheaply in the next four overs. Tight bowling by the experienced Doug (4-13-0) and Ruan (4-18-2), as well as newcomer Kavi (4-20-2) restricted the runs. However, apart from a short, productive spell by Danyal (2-13-1), the bowling then offered the batsmen a number of extras and more freedom to hit out. Aargau finished their 25 overs on 190 for 7.

ZCCC’s reply was emphatic and ruthless. Ruan and Noorkhan (29) put together 63 in 5.3 overs, Ruan and Doug (5) put together another 58 in 4.5 overs, while Ruan and Nic (13*) produced 72 more runs in 5 overs to chase down 191 in the 16th over and win by 8 wickets. Ruan finished unbeaten on a huge 127!

ZCCC U11 Annual Summary Season 2019/20

The season 2019/2020 has been a wonderful year for ZCCC U11s. After the initial setback as part of East side with BDJCC in the Leman Cup, all the young guns pulled themselves up and produced amazing performances one after another in their ZCCC U11 matches. In the whole season they were unbeaten across all tournament matches. Unfortunately, the Basel Indoor U11 got cancelled due to the COVID situation otherwise we would have had some more results and a good opportunity to defend that trophy as well.

With a few of the top performers graduating to U13, ZCCC U11s average team age is again around 9 but at the same time it gives these young players the opportunity to perform at a good level. Wishing all the U11s and the graduating players the very best for the upcoming season.

cricHQ match scorecard

As far as any of us could remember this was the first time that the Colts U19 teams had competed for the Leman Cup.  The match brought back together players from the West and East Switzerland some of whom have been playing together since they were 8 years old.

The East won the toss and elected to bat.  Openers Max Hoegenauer (7) and Latif Safi (12) faced some tight bowing and by over 8 both were out with the score on 28.  Suleman Ali Khan and James West then came together and put on a huge stand of 190 before Ali Khan retired on 51 off 102 balls in over 26 and West was out in the next over for 114 off 73 balls hitting 18 4s. The Run scramble in final overs took the score to 260 for 4; Eden Wardle scoring 16 and Shankar Panguluri 11.  For the West, Ismail Zaidi was the outstandIng bowler with 2 for 34 off 6 overs.
In reply the West  lost Nikhil Archarya (1) and then Louqmaan Motola (0) to some sharp bowling from Eden Wardle and Abdullah Zahir. Ismail Zaidi (61 off 42) and Mitch Perry (32 off 31) put on a stand of 94 hitting 7 sixes between them.  Wickets then fell quickly until at 118 Srivaass Ganesan (15) and Nevzad Chowdhury (22*) put on a defiant last wicket stand took the final total to 166. For the East Shankar Panguluri took 3 for 17, Eden Wardle 2 for 8 and Sasha Hall 2 for 17.
East captain James West received the man of the match award.

Everyone in the team contributed with some courageous batting, energetic fielding and efficient  bowling. George was top wicket taker for the match, taking out 2 of the best U15’s in Switzerland LBW. The lads all gave it their best attitude and effort and are still smiling,

ZCCC’s 13-year-old Shankar Man of the Match  (9th August)

In the 2nd XI match vs Zurich Lions CC the bowlers showed that they are rising to the challenge of adult cricket. In addition to Suleman’s 4-26-2, Shankar, Arian, Vadim and Navroz all took a wicket, while Danyal's 2 overs for 14 were as economical as the others. Although catches were dropped, Suleman, Brijesh and Shankar all held on to theirs, while Shankar’s smart and level-headed run out was only topped by Navroz’s direct hit from the boundary to run out a further batsman. The Lions finished on 166 for 8.

ZCCC’s run chased faltered early when opener Gokhul was LBW. Despite Nawroz's (11) and Max’s (19) resistance the runs came slowly on a tough wicket and when they departed, three more wickets fell in quick succession. Shankar (15) and Patrick (17) put together 40 runs at the end but it was unfortunately too little too late and we finished on 96 for 6, losing by 70 runs. Congratulations to the bowlers on some fine spells, Max for some great work behind the stumps and with the bat, and Shankar for an excellent all-round performance.

Zurich Crickets 1st XI into the Quarter-finals (9th August)

Batting first on the new all-weather surface in Uster, which made for difficult conditions, ZCCC batted first against Zurich Lions CC. Ruan (33) and Noorkhan (36) got us off to a positive start despite losing Westy early. However, a flurry of wickets in the 9th-12th overs left us 91 for 6. When Dayn departed in the 17th over, we were really struggling at 118 for 7. However, Doug (28), Latif (17) and Keeran (18) had other ideas. In the space of 3.5 overs they hammered 49 runs to take us to 167. Between them they hit 50 runs in 9 boundaries and a further 13 in ones and twos. The tail had wagged hugely, and massive credit goes to them for making this win possible.!

Zurich Lions’ reply was patient, but the boundaries were proving hard to find. At 50 the first wicket fell when Dayn ran out the opener. The sluice gates opened and ten runs later four wickets had been lost to Doug’s two strikes and an excellent run out by Lavan. Wickets then fell at regular intervals: a third to a caught behind off Doug (4-15-3), another run out with Ruan and Nic, and one each to Abdullah, Noorkhan and Dayn after some great pressure by Ruan (2-5-0). The Lions finished on 133 for 9 and Zurich Crickets had booked their place in the PT20 Quarter-finals. Congratulations to the team and Man of the Match Doug!

1st and 2nd XIs suffer heavy defeats (2nd August)

Batting first against Power Winterthur CC the 1st XI lost an unexpected wicket when Westy fell first ball. However, Baljit (36) and Noorkhan (35) put together a solid 87 in 11 overs to put us on course for a competitive total. However, apart from Ruan’s rapid 24 the runs dried up and 144 was a below par score as Power Winterthur CC fast proved. The bowlers struggled and within 12 overs the hard-hitting Osama and Asad racked up the necessary runs.

The 2nd XI also had a tough afternoon. Power Winterthur’s Osama and Asad again did the damage, both scoring centuries and putting together most of a massive 321. The only wickets were claimed by Attaullah and Shankar, together with a run out by Abdullah. Despite a positive start to our reply by Gokul (28) and Khawar (33), as well as Wafadar’s 15 at the end, the total was always going to be out of reach. However, 122 for 7 was an improvement and only 28 short of the target the team had set itself.

ZCCC wins U13 junior summer tournament! (Friday 31st July - Saturday 1st August)

Zurich Crickets CC 2nd XI fall to St.Gallen CC by 91 runs (July 25th)

St.Gallen’s openers got off to a brisk start despite some good lines and lengths from Keeran and Suleman. The 2nd XI are fast learning that anything short or not bowled enough on the off side will be punished and if one or two balls in an over err that way, the boundaries get found. Aryan, though, snatched a first wicket with a mistimed heave up and into the hands of Gokul. The score was 67-1 after 7 overs. The next wicket was a wonderfully executed run-out by debutant Shankar with a direct hit to the bowler’s end! Wicket number three and Aryan clean bowled his man – 110-3 in the 13th over. Shankar came on to bowl and his first ball gets dropped! The second ball is also put down! He has to wait for his 6th ball before the ball ends safely wrapped in the hands of Keeran at cow-corner. 123-4 after 14 overs. In the next over Suleman strikes, this time with a catch to Aryan. Fifteen runs later and Shankar picks up his second wicket and again it is Keeran in the deep making good ground to remove the tenacious opener. Despite economical and consistent bowling by Attaullah (4-22-0), St.Gallen push hard and post almost 50 more runs in the final five overs. Catches win matches and we are guilty of letting St.Gallen off the hook too many times and the guests get away with 187-7. Notwithstanding, the team remained buoyant and there are many positives to take away in the fielding department.

We struggled with the bat. The runs arrived slowly in dribs and drabs. Gokhul (28) once more steadied the ship, batting through to the 16th over but unable to accelerate. Meanwhile, batting partners came and went with no one able to accelerate the turn of the scoreboard. Too many dot balls with players too often desperately wanting to heave the ball to the leg-side boundary. When Gokhul departed, Vadim (16*) and Attaullah (10*), however, put together a fine 29 runs in the final four overs. It is in the batting department that we need to make the biggest strides and the matches are the perfect place to learn.

ZCCC members introduce over 100 children to cricket (15th July)

Fit4future, the largest health initiative in Switzerland, runs holiday sport camp weeks during the summer for roughly 1000 young children around the country. Fit4future motivates children to take more exercise in a playful way, sensitizes them to a balanced diet and also promotes their mental health.

Since 2013, "fit4future" has been offering polysports camps in cooperation with numerous sports associations, clubs and sports authorities, including Zurich Crickets CC in 2020. During these varied holiday weeks, children of primary school age try out different sports in a playful way and perhaps discover a new hobby.

From 13 to 17 July, Hardau Sports Hall in Zurich hosted 110 children who tried their hands at sports such as tennis, basketball, street racket, football, athletics, wrestling, rugby, and of course cricket.

In six 45-minute sessions Dayn, Nic and Patrick introduced children between the ages of 6-11 to the basics of cricket: catching, throwing, running between the wickets and batting were tried out in fun and competitive games, while they all finished up by playing mini-matches in small teams.

It was a rewarding day working with enthusiastic, energy-laden and sometimes very noisy participants and one that demanded unflagging concentration, flexibility and motivational skills, in particular with the 6/7-year-olds after the 3pm stage! A number of children are keen to join the club.

ZCCC 2nd XI lose by big margin but showed much promise (18th July)

Batting first Winterthur CC lost an early wicket to Suleman’s wonderful caught & bowled. Together with Eden he bowled some tight lines and created pressure. Eden was also rewarded with a wicket when Suleman took a catch to remove the second opener. However, then the runs came big time. Aryan, recovering from a disappointing first over, did well in his remaining three by restricting the run flow and deservedly picked up a wicket with a catch taken by Latif. The players are on a steep learning curve and T20 cricket is a hard taskmaster. Anything bowled short or giving batsmen too much room gets automatically punished. There is little room for error and players admitted that helping each other by upping the noise in the field is essential and certainly one of the things they can improve on.

As a batting unit the 2nds then faced the uphill battle of chasing 205.

See below ZCCC's 2nd XI reply.

  • In reply to Winterthur’s 205 for 3 Gokhul and Nawroz got off to a positive start full of intent.
  • Clipped away for 4 but unfortunately the only one that day!
  • Strong running between the wickets but...
  • ...Nawroz (8) did not really get going before getting caught behind.
  • Khawar struggled to get bat on ball and was trapped LBW.
  • Meanwhile, Gokul motored along with new man, Max.
  • Max (7) was busy at the crease...
  • ...keeping the scoreboard ticking along until he edged to the keeper.
  • Enter Asadullah...
  • who proceeded to play some of the best shots of the match,
  • creaming and carving balls to the off-side boundary.
  • Together with Gokhul (33) they upped the run-rate and added almost 50 runs in quick tempo.
  • Another quick run to the leg side.
  • Cutting hard to the off side...
  • while Asadullah adds another 4...
  • ...and then a 6. When they succumbed only a handful of runs was produced.
  • Latif (9), unusually, found it difficult to get the ball away
  • Suleman was unable to make an impact.
  • He was then bowled.
  • Brijesh entered the fray determined to find some runs...
  • ...as did Eden, but again could make no impact.
  • Danyal joined Latif but did not manage to face a ball. Zurich Crickets, to their credit, did bat out the 20 overs though, finishing on 108 for 8.
  • We do have the bowlers, and we do have the batsmen to do much more. Playing regularly, getting the team to gel well, learning from mistakes and building on the strengths of each other promise better results. It is a work in progress.

ZCCC 1st XI remain unbeaten after 3 matches in T20 league (18th July)

In the third T20 match Zurich Crickets CC faced Winterthur CC. Electing to bat first the first wicket soon fell but Westy (10) and Norkhan settled until over six when running a risky single Westy was run out with a direct hit – 32 for 2. Twenty-one runs and three overs later Chris was caught. Noorkhan’s spectacular 68 included a flurry of 4s and 6s, eleven in total, and gave us momentum and the belief that a defendable total was possible. When he was caught in the 16th over with 99 runs on the board we were looking at a possible 150 runs with 6 batsmen still to come. But runs dried up and Nic (13*) was struggling. Lavan (5) had the right attitude but could not find the boundary. Dayn’s more than helpful 16 runs, including an excellent 6, lifted us to 132 for 5. Our bowlers would have to work hard.

The photos tell the story.

  • Lavan opened the bowling. His second 'legal' delivery clean-bowled WCC's opener giving ZCCC the perfect start.
  • Bowling in tandem with Keeran the next wicket came in the second over. Caught by Baljit. WCC were 20 for 2.
  • It was an devastating display. In over three Lavan took out the next batsman with a catch to Attaullah! And then he added wicket number 4 by producing a catch for Dayn!
  • Over 4 and it was Keeran's turn again. A golden duck and the 5th batsman has to depart. Edged and caught behind.
  • The batting team could not settle. Trying hard to find the boundary, too many of the balls threatened to produce another wicket.
  • At 26 for 5 hopes of chasing down the 133 runs needed were fading.
  • A swing and a miss to land in the gloves of Nic.
  • And then a sharp edge and the sixth wicket finds the mitt of the keeper. 27 for 6 after 3.4 overs.
  • But it was not all over. WCC's captain rebuilt cautiously.
  • But then Dayn struck to take the 7th wicket in the 7th over - a catch taken by Chris in the covers.
  • Dayn (4-14-2) and Doug (4-16-0) bowled perfect spells. Their 8 overs went for just 30 runs, piled on the pressure, and things look done and dusted.
  • Abdullah came on and with the score on 63 he produced the 8th wicket by bowling the batsman.
  • Ten runs later and Dayn finally managed to end WCC's captain's gritty resistance which brought the tail-enders to the crease.
  • Two dropped catches and with balls being flayed to the boundaries Zurich Crickets had to bowl out the 20 overs and with WCC just 15 runs short the relief was great. Catches win matches and it isn't over until the last ball has been bowled!

Zurich Crickets 1st XI dominates St.Gallen CC to win by 7 wickets, with 2 balls to spare! (July 11th)

  • Opting to bowl, Lavan and Ruan opened proceedings. Lavan's first ball was skied high, but dropped. However, the second ball was edged and sharply taken by Ruan at 1st slip! The almost perfect start.
  • St.Gallen settled but Abdullah's spell immediately produced results - a catch for Baljit.
  • Relief for the team with St.Gallen having started briskly with 56 for two after just 6.2 overs.
  • However, the run rate slowed dramatically with Doug, Abdullah and Dayn adding dot ball to dot ball.
  • Ball after ball landed with the keeper.
  • Frustration began to affect the batsmen.
  • Wickets 3 and 4 followed, two more to Abdullah and one to Doug.
  • And then the 5th one, the captain, all three within the space of 5 balls and all three to catches: Westy, Latif and Ruan. St.Gallen had slumped to 90 for 5.
  • The bowling continued to squeeze and runs proved hard to come by. It was the boundaries that the batsmen sought.
  • Singles and twos were rare and the fielding sharp and threatening.
  • When Eden came on, he quickly conjured wicket 6 with the score on 107.
  • Three or four boundaries were found but St.Gallen were struggling.
  • Again too many dot balls ensued.
  • Dayn was unfortunate not to be rewarded but he produced great pressure bowling his three overs for just 13 runs.
  • Doug then come on for a second spell. A few dot balls ensued.
  • And then the first of three wickets!
  • Two were bowled.
  • The third landed in the gloves of Nic. A hattrick! And St.Gallen were 133 for 9 in the 17th over.
  • Lavan returned to squash any ideas of boosting the score.
  • He finished on 4-26-1.
  • The final wicket was left to Ruan with a catch for Doug. St.Gallen finished on 136 all out.
  • With 7 runs an over needed Baljit set about the run chase in formidable style.
  • Boundaries were forthcoming, but openers Baljit and Westy were also prepared to run hard between the wickets.
  • The poor balls were dispatched.
  • Westy once again got on with the job and stuck with his partner.
  • Westy's 32 came in style. When he departed with the score on 90 the required run rate was still 7. The openers had successfully taken the sting out of St.Gallen.
  • Baljit's 50 runs off 40 balls were a joy to watch. He was caught just 6 runs later.
  • Noorkhan entered the fray.
  • Things began to look tight for St.Gallen with so many ZCCC batsmen still to come.
  • Together with Ruan boundaries remained elusive, but there were quick runs on offer.
  • Ruan pushed hard for the singles and twos. The total crept to 120 in the 17th over.
  • A run-out at the end of the 17th over and Ruan had to depart.
  • With 16 runs required off the final two overs, Nic's eight off the 19th over were welcome relief.
  • More would have been more calming but Noorkhan's 6 with two balls to spare got us deservedly over the line.
  • Two wins in one day and a delighted team.

Zurich Crickets 1st XI overcome ZCCC 2nd XI (July 11th)

  • Winning the toss ZCCC 1st XI were quickly into their stride.
  • It was Baljit's 77 off 36 balls that formed the backbone of the innings with eleven superbly struck boundaries.
  • Latif's four overs produced the prize wickets of the openers - both to catches by Doug. Baljit has to depart but at 118 after 10.3 overs damage has been done.
  • Noorkhan was determined to maintain the run rate with his quickfire 14 runs.
  • Westy's one handsomely struck six proved the exception in his innings.
  • In the main Westy calmly dealt in 1s and 2s anchoring the innings.
  • An array of shots around the ground had the fielders working overtime.
  • The bowlers did their best to throttle back the run rate.
  • Depite a fine spell by Suleman he was not rewarded with a wicket.
  • Westy (32) departed shortly after Noorkhan with the score on 155 in the 15th over.
  • It was Doug's bowling that undid Noorkhan.
  • However, anything short was immediately taken advantage of.
  • Ruan immediately upped the run rate to keep the runs flowing.
  • His 20 runs came off just 13 balls.
  • Eden bowled well and was rewarded.
  • An edge to the keeper Nawroz and Ruan had to depart - 185 for 4
  • Ruan was assisted by Nic.
  • Nic's 13 not out saw the rain begin again. The innings had been reduced to 19 overs by the umpires.
  • Khawar opened the batting for the 2nd XI.
  • Together with Gokhul they accumulated steadily and watchfully but dot balls were too plentiful.
  • Runs were hard to come by with Lavan as economical as ever.
  • Runs were kept to a minumum with no boundaries coming in the first 6 overs.
  • Pressure mounted with throws from the fielders preventing quick singles.
  • Khawar was bowled by Lavan.
  • Lavan's four overs went for just 12 runs.
  • The technicalites of taking a wicket!
  • Gokhul gets hold of a rare loose one from Dayn, who then removed him with a catch to Ruan.
  • Doug comes to the crease.
  • Noorkhan was then brought on to bowl.
  • Almost immediately he produced results by again squeezing the run rate.
  • Eden was run out with some slick work by Lavan and Nic.
  • Noorkhan took three wickets for 14 runs.
  • However, not before Nawroz had shown us his 'helicopter' four.
  • His quickly struck 23 showed how dangerous he can be.
  • Despite not taking a wicket Ruan remained difficult to play with his variations.
  • He gave little opportunity to the batsmen. Suleman was not out on 7 and the 1st XI had won by 99 runs but the 2nd XI need to get matches under their belts, gain experience and improve match by match.

Zurich Crickets U11s travel to Basel for first match of the season  (July 4th)

The excitement for a normal friendly match was never before experienced as it was on Saturday July 4th 2020 AC (After Corona). To put things to perspective, ZCCC U11s played their last competitive match of any sort in Nov 2019 BC (Before Corona) at the Gingins Indoor tournament and their last outdoor match was way back in September 2019 BC at the Romande Cup. The friendly against Basel at Bachgraben Basel saw wonderful parcipation of 13 ZCCC players and 12 from Basel. They were well supported by perfect weather for a game of cricket. This match was 24 overs per innings.

Zurich Crickets CC won the game comfortably by 18 runs.

Both 1st and 2nd XIs win by 8-wicket margins vs Aargau CC (June 20th)

In good conditions and winning the toss, ZCCC’s 1st XI elected to bowl at Aargau CC. With extras hampering and dampening the attack Aargau were allowed to put together 42 before the first of two wickets fell to Dayn. Another two followed and at 49 for 3 the guests looked to rebuild. Restricted by the economical overs of Ruan and Attaullah, Aargau CC put together 140 for 5 in their 20 overs. In reply Ruan (17) and Noorkhan (27) clubbed a lively 47 in the first 5 overs before both losing their wickets in quick succession. Westy 64* was in fine form, carving the poor balls to the boundary, not always easy in the slow Deutweg outfield, and content to run ones and twos with Nic (20*) to craft a 92-run partnership and an 8-wicket win with an over to spare.

The 2nd XI also bowled first and a fine display it was with Eden (1), Abdullah (1) and Suleman (2) all finding their line and length to prevent attempts to haul the ball to the boundary. Keeper Max was unlucky not to have been presented with a flurry of edges by frustrated batsmen. They were ably supported by Saeed (1) and Aryan as well as by some excellent fielding in the deep with the big arms of Nawroz, Gianluca, Eden and Abdullah limiting the running between the wickets. The high standards in the field were already evident when a cool-headed run-out by Gokul effected the first wicket. Finishing on 133 for 6, ZCCC had given themselves a more than reachable target.

Keeping up with the run-rate Khawar (25) and Gokul (13) accumulated 45 before both were removed by Raj. Eden (30*) and Max (24), with maturity and style, running hard between the wickets, and happy to add a large number of extras to their 76-run partnership, completed an excellent chase for the loss of no further wickets to bring about a thoroughly deserved 8-wicket win.

Zurich Crickets CC 1st and 2nd XIs start well in the new season (June 13th)

The 1st XI played a first Friendly vs Zurich Lions at the Embrach ground on Saturday 13th June. Reduced to 16 overs due to the threatening heavy rain forecast for the early evening Lions elected to bat first. Wickets fell regularly and never allowed the Lions to accelerate their run rate. Lions were reduced to 111 for 9 with wickets falling to Noorkhan (2), Lavan (2), Keeran (1) and Wafadar (1), while three run-outs did suggest that our fielding is again a valuable weapon in our armoury. Zurich Crickets were clearly rusty at times in the field but willing to fight back and improve on any errors made. A warm welcome to the three newcomers Gianluca, Towafee and Doug.

The batting told a clear story. The openers Baljit (39) and Noorkhan (18) steadily built at 7 an over until the first wicket fell just before 50 came up. Ruan (24*) and Westy (22*) then crunched through the numbers. The final 6 overs went for 62 runs. Crickets won by 8 wickets with 20 balls to spare.

The 2nd XI also bowled first against Zurich Lions. After the Lions’ brisk start Suleman took out the top order with a fine trio of wickets, two in his first over! He was ably supported by Eden and Abdullah (1) and they did well to restrict the run rate. In the final 3 overs Vadim, Khawar (1) and Abusaeed (1) also did admirably to limit the runs to under 6 an over. The Lions finished on 131 for 7.

Zurich Crickets’ reply was dampened with a first ball wicket but Gokul (18) and Eden (20) rebuilt patiently and calmly, playing some of the best shots of the day. When Eden was unfortunately run out, Nawroz proved just how dangerous he can be. His 54 runs after a quiet start were spectacular! With a storm brewing, the skies darkening and the winds beginning to hamper the big shots, Latif and Brijesh stayed with him, keeping him on strike as much as possible until just 12 were needed off the final over! 8 were scored off the first 5 balls. A huge strike went skywards and towards the boundary, but it was not to be. The team finished 4 runs short of a victory. This was a brilliant first showing by the 2nd XI and the whole team deserves much credit for the performance, the way they gelled and kept their heads up thoughout. We look forward to seeing more of this team.

Zurich Crickets seniors earn praise ahead of the new season (23rd February)

While training for the new season has begun in earnest indoors, Swiss Cricket President and Competitions Manager have complemented the work that our 1st XI put in last season by saying "in both the Pickwick Twenty20 Final and the CSPL Final and the International Club tournament in Zuoz... it was Zurich Crickets that impressed most, a team made up almost exclusively of young players, reaching two of those finals," and: "the team that has shown incredible fight and played excellent cricket was Zurich Crickets CC who qualified for the finals in their debut season, and congratulations to all the players and coaches of Zurich Crickets."

Training in the indoor season is all about getting the simple things right, knowing what you do well and confidently reproducing those skills outdoors, but also enjoying the company of one's teammates and the great game itself. We will look to build on the results of last season and help introduce new players to the senior game: A total of 352 players took part in the 2019 Swiss league. Four ZCCC players were among the top 15 batsmen, five of our bowlers finished with figures in the top 13, seven of the team were among the top 30 fielders, while again seven players were ranked within the top 22 Most Valuable Players.

We wish all our players a great season!
